Philip Wegman

Director of Financial Exploration

Growing up, money and it's management always fascinated me. Whether selling soda at school or charging my brother a fixed 10% interest on the $13 he borrowed from me, I have always been a bit of a saver and earner. Upon going to college, my mom encouraged me to pursue a degree in Human Resource Management as I like people and business. While attending Kansas State University, I stumbled across the financial planning program and my life was forever changed when I fell in love with both the technical as well as the personal side of being a planner.

Upon graduation, I spent over two years in Vanguard’s prestigious Financial Advisor Development Program, where I rotated through several advisory roles. As a High Net Worth and Mass Affluent Advisor, I provided planning guidance to clients managing between $50,000 and $5 million in assets. After my time at Vanguard, I joined a boutique financial planning firm, where I deepened my knowledge of financial planning and strengthened my skills in building thoughtful, personalized plans. From there, I moved back to the Midwest when I got engaged to my wife, Emily. She owns and runs FaireCoffee, which keeps us both quite busy.

The most satisfying parts of my job are removing unnecessary complexity, deciphering financial jargon, and helping families bring clarity to their financial lives. Within planning, I especially like going deep on the tax side. Being a small business owner, I know how much the complexity of taxes weighs on a small business owner's mind.

Outside of work, my wife and I enjoy:

  • Being involved in our local church
  • Drinking coffee (she likes hers hot, and I only drink mine cold)
  • Cooking together
  • Running FaireCoffee

  • What is a problem in the industry that you want to fix?

Relying on unneeded complication and jargon to make you as an advisor seem valuable instead of providing deep value through purposeful planning work.

  • What are the values that drive you?

    Truth. Excellence. Fun. Rest. Family.

  • What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

Cooking and walking alongside my wife who runs and owns FaireCoffee.

  • The best piece of advice you’ve ever been given is…

Hoarding money and wasting money are two sides of the same coin.

  • If you could invent a holiday, it would definitely involve:

    Coffee and a movie!

  • Beach or mountains?

Tough question! While I enjoy both, I would lean more towards the cool air of the mountain combined with a cold cup of coffee (I only like iced coffee).

  • Early riser or night owl?

Early riser! If you marry the owner of a coffee shop, you definitely need to be willing to get up early.

  • What's the most inspiring part of your job?

    Making the complex simple.

  • If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I am a steak and potatoes kind of guy.

  • What is the best gift you ever received?

My faith and a firm financial footing (both gifts from my mom and dad).

  • If you were ruler of your own country what would be the first law you would introduce?

Mandatory day of rest. It wouldn’t have to be a specific day of the week, but everyone would be required to take one day off of work to be with family and do things that fill up their cup.
