Most people think of legacy as something that happens someday. Something left behind after they’re gone. But the most meaningful legacies aren’t delayed. They’re lived. They’re experienced in real time through generosity, through intentional decisions, and through the impact you get to witness with your own eyes.

As Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” The question isn’t just what you’ll leave behind. It’s what you’re willing to give, and experience today.

Legacy is a word that gets overused, but it still carries weight. For some, it brings to mind an inheritance. For others, it’s the impact someone had on their life—the time, generosity, or presence that shaped who they are today.

Let me give you a personal example.

The first car I bought brand new was a Dark Saphire Blue Mazda 6 GT back in 2016. I took pride in that car and did everything I could to take care of it. It hadn’t given me any trouble until late last year, when I found out it needed significant repairs. Not ideal timing, especially with expenses rising for our family of eight.

When my parents heard about it, they surprised me. They offered to help us replace the car.

I’ve seen clients do this for their kids over the years, and I’ve seen the impact it can have. This time, I was on the receiving end. It was a gift we didn’t expect and wouldn’t have asked for. We would have made things work. But in that moment, they chose to step in and ease the burden.

Merriam-Webster defines legacy as “something (such as money or property) that is passed on after death.” But that definition feels incomplete.

What my parents gave us wasn’t just financial help. It was peace of mind. It created space for our family to move forward without added stress during a busy and meaningful season of life.

And here’s the part that matters most: they got to see it.

They got to see the surprise, the gratitude, and the impact it had on our family. And if we take any trips this summer before our oldest heads off to college, there’s no doubt those memories will, in part, be made possible by their generosity.

That’s not a future legacy. That’s a present one.

At Journey Beyond Wealth, we’ve long talked about helping families “Build a Legacy Beyond Your Wealth.” But over time, we’ve realized something deeper: the real opportunity isn’t just building a legacy. It’s living it.

If you’re in a position where you have more than you’ll need for your lifetime, it’s worth asking a different question. Not just “What do I want to leave behind?” but “What impact do I want to experience while I’m still here?”

For some, that might look like helping a child or grandchild with a down payment on a home. For others, it’s contributing toward education, supporting a medical need, or creating shared experiences through travel. And for many, it’s giving generously to their church, their community, or causes they care deeply about.

These aren’t just financial decisions. They’re moments. They’re memories. They’re opportunities to shape lives not just someday…but now.

Here’s the reality. When legacy is delayed, you often miss the most meaningful part of it—the ability to see it, feel it, and be part of it.

So if you’ve been blessed with more than you need, don’t just plan to leave a legacy.

Start living it.
